Captive rings

I had my first attempt at captive rings over the weekend. I was given a pile of old pine from a water tank support by a work colleague. Quite a bit of it is badly cracked – too badly cracked to make anything big out of it. I managed to salvage one piece, which had hardly any damage so went for a goblet shape.

I probably spent as much time sharpening my old tools than I did using them with this. Cheapo carbon steel doesn’t seem to keep a keen edge as well as HSS tools. Next purchase from Axminster will almost certainly be a small skew, followed by a bowl gouge.
